In 1947, nine civic-minded lovers of gardening formed Plano Garden Club with the express purpose of beautifying Plano. With our first project, we initiated the landscaping of Haggard Park and planted our first Arbor Day tree. That tree  is now over sixty-five years old, and the park is now a showplace in the center of downtown.

The first flower show was held in 1948 at the home of Mrs. Dolly Hasford.  Over the years Flower Shows have been an integral part of educating ourselves and the public and stimulating interest in horticulture, and as such, are always free to the public.  By providing an outlet for creative expression and for sharing the objectives of National Garden Clubs, our efforts have been recognized by receiving the prestigious National Garden Club Flower Show Achievement Award in 1999, 2001 and 2009. 

Since 1994. Plano Garden Club has contributed teddy bears and pajamas to the Children’s Advocacy Center.  Since 1998 members gather in November to decorate table-top holiday trees—over 1000 and counting —to bring smiles to patients on the cancer floor of Children’s Medical Center at both Dallas and Plano campuses.     

Begun in 1999 Creative Designers hands-on floral workshops, available to Plano Garden Club members only, provides more instruction and practice in floral design. Garden Spaders was organized in 2010 for members who want to learn more about horticulture.  

In 1998, Plano Garden Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a lovely tea at the home of Vicki and Hal Compton. In the same year, the club became a gold club and has maintained that rating. 

Plano Garden Club hosted the District X Convention several times in its 25-year history. Members Wilma Smith (1999-2001) and Dana Serafine (2009-2011) each served as Texas Garden Clubs District X Director. Every year several members serve as officers and chairmen in Texas Garden Club, Inc., District X, and Dallas Council of Garden Clubs. 

Biennial Garden Tours since 2002 made many new gardening friends and earned over $30,000 for college scholarships awarded to persons studying in garden related fields. 

Plano Garden Club members have diverse interests, backgrounds, and experiences. The common thread tying all the members together is their love of gardening and pride in a job well done.
